Oklahoma Sooners 131st Anniversary 2026 Christmas Ornament

Few college traditions are as easy to recognise as a covered wagon racing across the grass at Owen Field. This ornament captures it in holiday colours: white ponies in red harness, the wagon’s cream canopy lettered “Sooner Schooner”, crimson wheels, and two mascots in “Sooners 1” jerseys waving from the bench.

The Wagon Every Sooner Knows

The Sooner Schooner made its debut on 26 September 1964. It is a replica of the Conestoga-style covered wagons settlers drove during the 1889 Land Run, the event that gave the state and its team their nickname: “Sooners” were the settlers who crossed into the territory earlier than allowed. The wagon is pulled by two white ponies named Boomer and Sooner and driven by the RUF/NEKS spirit squad, and it became the university’s official mascot in 1980. After every Oklahoma score, the Schooner makes its run.

131 Years Since 1895

Oklahoma fielded its first football team in 1895. Since then the Sooners have won seven national championships (1950, 1955, 1956, 1974, 1975, 1985 and 2000) and set the major-college record of 47 straight wins between 1953 and 1957, a mark that still stands. In 2024 the program moved into the SEC, opening a new chapter in a very old story. The banner on this ornament, “131st Anniversary 1895–2026”, counts every one of those years.

What the Ornament Shows

• The Sooner Schooner with its cream canopy, red “Sooner Schooner” lettering and an interlocking OU on the side.
• Two white ponies in black and red harness, mid-stride.
• The two costumed mascots, one in a crimson jersey and one in white, one holding a confetti popper.
• A small wooden barrel on the wagon and bright crimson spoked wheels.
• A red-and-gold banner along the bottom with the anniversary and the years.

The ornament is a single flat acrylic piece, UV-printed on both sides and cut to the outline of the scene. The depth you see in the photos is printed detail, not a sculpted model, and the image on the front can be seen through to the back. Choose your size at checkout. Each one ships in a carton with straw-paper padding.

A Keepsake for the Family Tree

An ornament like this tends to come out every December for years. It suits a graduate’s first tree, a grandparent who had season tickets through the Switzer years, or a family that marks home games on the kitchen calendar. Hang it near the top of the tree, where the crimson banner catches the light.

Questions From Sooners Fans

Why does it say 131st anniversary?

Oklahoma’s first football team played in 1895, and 2026 marks 131 years since then.

Is the ornament three-dimensional?

No. It is flat acrylic printed on both sides; the wagon and ponies are printed in rich detail rather than sculpted.

Which size should I choose?

The smallest sizes suit a branch near the top of the tree; larger sizes work well as a centrepiece or hung in a window.
