Coastal Carolina Chanticleers Back to the 90s Hoodie

Coastal Carolina Chanticleers Back to the 90s Hoodie is white and loud in the best way: a teal-and-black Chanticleer head bursts from a hot-pink triangle on the chest, with turquoise COASTAL lettering, a small SBC mark and squiggles, dots and triangles scattered like confetti. The back carries an oversized teal 90’s in the same graphic style, and teal accents run down the sleeves.

Why a Rooster in Teal

When Coastal Carolina became an independent university in 1983, it wanted a nickname in keeping with the Gamecocks of South Carolina. An English professor suggested Chanticleer, the proud rooster of Geoffrey Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, and the Chants were born. Today the school’s colours are teal, bronze and black.

Football arrived later. The Chanticleers kicked off their first season on September 6, 2003, beating Newberry 21-14 in front of 7,948 fans at the new Brooks Stadium. That makes the program younger than the 90s nostalgia on this hoodie, which is half the fun: it imagines Chants football in the decade of neon windbreakers and boom boxes.

The program grew up fast. In 2020, Coastal went unbeaten through the regular season and hosted BYU on December 5 in a matchup arranged in a matter of days, with ESPN’s College GameDay broadcasting from Conway. The Chants won 22-17, and the teal field at Brooks Stadium became familiar to fans far beyond South Carolina.
