Smokey and the Bandit 50th Anniversary 2026 Advent Calendar

The Whole Chase, One Ornament at a Time

This advent calendar takes a road movie and breaks it into twenty-four hanging pieces. The black Trans Am is there, gold firebird spread across the hood. So is the Georgia licence plate reading BAN ONE, the detail that still gets a laugh fifty years on.

Around them: the man in the black hat and leather jacket, the bride who got into the car in her wedding dress, the sheriff in his tan uniform, the basset hound, the CB radio with its handset, the sheriff’s cruiser, and the semi with its trailer. Hung together they read as a story rather than a set of objects.

Fifty Years of a Film That Should Not Have Worked

Smokey and the Bandit opened on 27 May 1977. The plot is an errand: drive to Texas, pick up four hundred cases of beer that cannot legally be transported, and get back before the deadline. The director, Hal Needham, had spent his career as a stuntman, and it shows in a film that is essentially one long chase held together by Burt Reynolds, Sally Field and Jerry Reed enjoying themselves.

It made more than $126 million in North America and finished 1977 as the second biggest domestic release of the year. The film that beat it was Star Wars, which gives a sense of what kind of company it was keeping.

The Trans Am did just as well out of it. The black-and-gold car became the thing people remembered first, and demand for it rose sharply off the back of the film — one of the clearest cases of a movie selling a car that was not trying to be sold.

Why This One Gets Passed Down

Smokey and the Bandit tends to be a film people were shown rather than one they found. It runs on a holiday afternoon, somebody’s father puts it on, and a child who has no interest in 1977 ends up knowing every beat of the final run.

That is what gives a themed countdown its reason. The ornaments work because more than one generation in the room recognises them, and the recognition is specific: not “an old car” but that car, not “a dog” but Fred.

So it lands best in a house where the film is already shared. Give it to the person who taught you the CB slang, or the one who still calls a highway patrol car a smokey, and the countdown becomes a month of small references rather than a set of decorations.

The CB radio ornament is the one that dates the film most precisely. In the late 1970s citizens band radio went from a trucker’s tool to a national craze, and for a few years ordinary drivers had handles, swapped traffic reports and warned each other about speed traps on the open channel. It was a social network that ran on an aerial and a knob, and it burned out almost as quickly as it caught.

Smokey and the Bandit arrived in the middle of that and is partly why people remember it. The film did not invent the slang; it put it in cinemas at the exact moment the rest of the country was learning it.

A Note on the Anniversary

The film’s fiftieth anniversary falls in 2027, counting from the May 1977 release. A calendar bought for this December sits in the run-up to that date rather than on it, which is a reasonable way to use the season before the anniversary itself arrives.

Inside the Calendar

The group photograph shows the ornaments together so you can judge the set before buying. It is a reference image, not an opening order, and nothing in the product information assigns a particular piece to a particular day.

Questions About the Bandit Calendar

When is the actual fiftieth anniversary?

May 2027, fifty years after the film’s release on 27 May 1977.

Are the ornaments ready to hang?

Each piece shown has a cord and a metal cap, so they can go straight onto a tree without separate hooks.

Does a specific character appear on a specific date?

No. The numbered doors run the month; the photograph shows the full set rather than the sequence.

Can the ornaments be used again next year?

Yes. Store them apart so the painted surfaces do not rub, and they come back out with the rest of the decorations.

More film and road-movie pieces are listed in the full collection.
