Predator 40th Anniversary 1987-2027 Commemorative Coin

Forty Years Since the Hunt Began

Predator reached cinemas on June 12, 1987. Directed by John McTiernan, it sent Arnold Schwarzenegger’s rescue team, led by Major Alan “Dutch” Schaefer, into a Central American jungle where something was hunting them one by one. Stan Winston’s studio built the creature, Kevin Peter Hall played it, and its mandibled face became one of the most recognisable in science fiction.

The film went on to launch a franchise of sequels, crossovers and comics, and 2027 marks its 40th anniversary.

The cast gave fans lines they still quote, from Dutch’s “Get to the chopper!” to “If it bleeds, we can kill it”, with Carl Weathers and Jesse Ventura alongside Schwarzenegger. The hunter returned in Predator 2 in 1990, Predators in 2010, The Predator in 2018 and Prey in 2022, each building on the rules the original set: the cloaking, the heat vision and the trophies.

The Design

The coin centres on the Predator’s bio-mask with a red targeting dot, flanked by skulls and green jungle leaves, above two crossed blades and mechanical detailing. PREDATOR runs across the top in red, with “1987–2027” and “40th Anniversary” along the lower rim. The finish has an antique-gold, engraved look in red, black, green and bronze.

Display and Care

The coin looks at home in a stand beside a Blu-ray shelf, in a capsule with other film memorabilia or on a desk as a worry coin. Keep it dry, store it apart from keys and loose change, and polish it with a soft cloth.

Predator Fan Questions

Is it legal tender?

No. It is a commemorative piece for display, not currency.

Are both sides printed?

Yes. Both faces carry printed artwork.

How large is it?

Roughly 4.3 cm across, noticeably bigger than a US half dollar, so the mask and the lettering read clearly at arm’s length.

Is it a good gift for a Schwarzenegger fan?

Yes. The 1987 date and the jungle setting point straight to his original film rather than the later sequels.
