NYCC Samhain The Real Ghostbusters Villain Funko Pop Figure

The Ghost Who Wanted Halloween to Last Forever

The NYCC Samhain The Real Ghostbusters Villain Funko Pop Figure captures a character with an unusually clear ambition. Samhain did not want revenge or territory. He wanted one night to never end, and he had the power to try.

The sculpt catches him mid-threat. A carved pumpkin head with a jagged mouth and teeth, eyes lit from inside, a green stem curling off the crown. Below it, a burgundy robe with a high purple collar falls to the ground with no feet beneath it, and translucent blue energy coils around the shoulders. Two orange hands reach forward out of the sleeves.

1986, and a Saturday-Morning Villain With Real Teeth

Samhain arrived in When Halloween Was Forever, the eighth episode of The Real Ghostbusters in 1986. The premise was unusually bold for a weekday cartoon: a spirit escapes, declares that Halloween will be permanent, and begins manipulating time to hold the world in endless night.

What makes him memorable is how he is beaten. Not with firepower, but with light. His weakness is the thing the night removes, which turns the whole episode into a neat piece of logic a child can follow and an adult can still appreciate. The villain is darkness; the answer is a lamp.

That gives the figure a detail worth noticing. The eyes are lit from within, the one source of light on an otherwise dark sculpt. It is the character’s threat and his undoing in the same feature.

The name was not invented for the cartoon either. Samhain is the Gaelic festival marking the end of harvest and the beginning of the dark half of the year, the night when the boundary between worlds was said to thin. Nearly everything modern Halloween does, the lanterns, the costumes, the bonfires, traces back through it. A children’s series naming its Halloween spirit after the festival itself was reaching a long way back, whether or not its audience knew it at the time.

Seen that way, the pumpkin head is not just a mask. It is the oldest thing in the episode wearing the most recognisable face of the modern holiday, which is a neater piece of design than a Saturday-morning cartoon strictly needed.

A Collectible That Marks Where Halloween Taste Begins

For a lot of people who now love October, this cartoon is where it started. Not a horror film they were too young to see, but a Saturday-morning episode that was genuinely unsettling inside a show they were allowed to watch. The pumpkin-headed figure in the robe did more recruiting for lifelong Halloween enthusiasm than most horror films ever managed.

A figure like this puts that origin point on a shelf. It belongs beside the rest of a collection in October, and it holds up the other eleven months as a sculpt with an unusual silhouette, since there are not many collectibles built around a robe with nothing under it.

As a gift it works for someone who grew up with the cartoon rather than only the films, or who collects villains instead of heroes. A note about watching the episode too young, and remembering it longer than you expected to, gives the piece its context.

Figure Details

Handle the figure by the robe and base rather than the extended hands or the stem, which are the most exposed parts of the sculpt.
