California Golden Bears Grateful Dead Hoodie is navy with a large gold-and-white emblem on the chest: the Cal script set inside a skull drawn in the style of the Dead’s famous logo. White sleeve bands carry blue lightning bolts, and the back spells out GRATEFUL BEARS in gold around a cartoon bear tucking a football under one arm beside another skull.
Two Bay Area Institutions
The Grateful Dead grew up on the other side of the Bay, and Berkeley became one of their homes. Between 1967 and 1989 the band played the Greek Theatre on the Cal campus 29 times, and recordings of those open-air shows still circulate among fans.
The bears are part of the story too. The Dead’s marching bears first appeared in 1973 on the back cover of History of the Grateful Dead, Volume One, better known as Bear’s Choice, named after sound engineer Owsley “Bear” Stanley. For a university whose teams are the Golden Bears, the pairing writes itself.
The band formed in Palo Alto in 1965, and its fan base has always been densest around the Bay. On game days in Berkeley, Cal’s own bear, the costumed mascot Oski, leads the crowd at Memorial Stadium in the hills above campus. This hoodie lets the two bears share one sweatshirt, which is how many Bay Area fans already think of them.
